Seniors celebrate last home game with win
by Amber Humphres
The ‘Hawks were up bright and early Saturday morning, taking on Wauconda in a non-conference challenge. Unfortunately, they came out with a 5-0 loss against a great team. Facing strong teams like this one helped the ‘Hawks realize that they would need to execute better in order to do well for the rest of the conference and into post-season.
On Tuesday, the team hosted Round Lake in another non-conference game. Last year, the ‘Hawks had a disappointing 1-0 loss against them. This time, they came back with a 4-0 win. Senior Shae Giovanni started off the scoring for the team off of a free kick outside the 18-yard box and added another later on, while seniors Maddie Hauck and Taylor Piggott each added one. Senior Paige Salamoun, Hauck, and Giovanni each assisted.
Yesterday, they played Woodstock in their first conference game of the week, coming out with a 5-0 victory. The team was able to communicate effectively throughout the defense and step to the ball, making it hard for Woodstock to connect to the goal. On the offensive end, they put constant work on the ball, switching the field, and making runs to put the ball in the back of the net. Hauck and junior Amber Humphres each added two goals and Piggott added one. Piggott and Humphres added two assists and Giovanni added one.
The next day, the team traveled to Harvard to execute another win, dominating a 5-0 shutout. Humphres scored a hat trick while Hauck and Piggott each added one. Hauck, Giovanni, and Piggott each added an assist and Humphres had two.
Tuesday was not just any conference game for the seniors. This game, eight seniors took the home field for their last time. Although they were excited, they were sad for it to end.
“It feels bittersweet,” said Jessica Strzelczyk. “I’m excited to play this game and give it my all but I’m also upset that I won’t be able to play on my home field again with my teammates by my side.”
All seniors will be branching off into different paths. Shae Giovanni will be attending Millikin University and will be pursuing an athletic training major with a Spanish minor and enrolling in Pre-physical therapy. She will also be continuing her soccer career for the next four years there. Liv Siudak will also be continuing her soccer career at North Central College and will major in pre-dentistry. Maddie Hauck will be attending the University of Louisville, also majoring in pre-dentistry. Taylor Piggott will be attending the College of Lake County and will continue her soccer career; she is currently undecided. Mady Peterson will attend Iowa State University, pursuing pre-occupational therapy with a kinesiology & health major. Taylor Pokuta will be attending the University of Hawaii at Manoa, majoring in nursing to become a physician assistant. Paige Salamoun will be attending Florida Gulf Coast University, majoring in nursing to pursue a nurse practitioner career. Corti Sommerfeldt will be attending the Illinois State University to major in education and will play intramural sports. Jessica Strzelczyk will be attending McHenry County College to study in a pre-veterinary field.
From JV, Molley Whitlock will be attending Millikin University to further her volleyball career while also majoring in mathematics education. Zyon Fettes will be enlisting into the Marine Corps after high school to serve our country. Sabrina Vetter will be attending Harper College, later on transferring to UW-Platteville and will be majoring in forensic science. She also has high hopes on continuing her dance career.
For their last home game, the ‘Hawks came out with a 6-0 win against Woodstock North, initially starting out strong. Hauck had a hat-trick for the ‘Hawks, while Piggott added two. Whitlock also added a goal in her first varsity goal of the season. Humphres added two assists while sophomore Kasidee Hass, Giovanni, and Hauck added one. This win was very satisfying to the team, especially the seniors, because they took the opportunity to dominate their home field for one last time.
“Coming out with a win on senior night was is just the icing on the cake. I’m happy that I got to share one last win on our home field with our team,” said Giovanni.
Wish the ‘Hawks luck as they travel to Marengo, today at 4:30 p.m., in their last conference game of the season.

Softball looks to win against Woodstock North
by Hannah LaMotta
Johnsburg softball has reached past the halfway mark, and many conference games are being played this last month of the season. On Tuesday both teams played an away Kishwaukee River Conference game a Woodstock H.S. Both teams had a scheduled home game but the game got moved to Woodstock due to wet field conditions at their home fields. Both teams got the win, with varsity slaughtering the Blue Streaks in 6 innings, 13-3. Sophomore Tess Wright contributed significantly as she led off for the Lady ‘Hawks and went 4-5. Sophomore Adriana Montewska also went 3-4 with a triple and two RBI’s. Junior Emily Owen was on the mound for the Lady ‘Hawks as she only gave up three runs, with great defense behind her. The Lady ‘Hawks as a team had 17 hits, which really got the offense going after breaking out of their shell.
“It felt really good to finally come together as a team and pull out a good win since last time we played them we lost,” Wright said.
The girls also played an away, non-conference game against Libertyville yesterday. The girls unfortunately lost the game 11-1 and will try and get back on track tonight against Woodstock North. Both teams are scheduled to be home so come and support your Lady ‘Hawks tonight in the conference game.
